Well, I don't want to spar with you, I agree with your position (and I'm a lesbian), and I like your reasoning enough to add you to my blog's sidebar, so there!

Hope you have a merry and blessed Christmas.

Very interesting, I read a little about Thomas Merton once but don't remember it well because I wasn't a Catholic (or a Christian) when I read it.

I like your blog very much.

It is not an "impulse" to be a sexual being. Celibacy is a gift from God, and even by the Church's teaching, a rare one. If you've been given that gift, then praise the Lord!

Other gays have not, however. And they in conscience have opted for a loving, committed convental relationship. Since you are adhering closely to official Church teaching, you will know that one's conscience is inviolable. That goes back to Thomas Aquinas.

Best wishes and prayers on your journey to wholeness for that is holiness.

If this solution works for you, then that is great. However, I think there is a third option: to live in a committed, loving relationship with a man AND remaining active, joyful, and fully involved in the Church's life, sacraments and all.

Church doctrines have changed and do change. A short and very incomplete list: think of Galileo, DeChardin. Think of democracy, usury, women's rights, slavery, workers' rights.

All these issues have seen a profound change in the Church's attitude.

On the other side of the coin, think of artificial contraception. The vast, vast majority of Catholics simply ignore it, yet they seemingly have no qualms about participating in Church life. In fact, many of the Church's stances on sexual issues are "received" the same way by the faithful. Still, they're probably lectors and sacristans and catechists right in front of you in Sundays.

"a life of celibacy and service".... i agree, for those that cannot turn to a heterosexual lifestyle, the only option is celibacy and service. we are all tempted. we all face crap in life that we have to push back constantly. we all have to submit to celibacy in some area of our lives: alcohol, gambling, over-eating, etc..... we all have our area of temptation.
unfortunately, the social stigma is much stronger in some areas than others.....
i'm looking forward to more of your thoughts on this.

blessings,
mandy
